Cell Phones and Other Electronic Devices

 October 15, 2015

Dear Families of the 51st Avenue Academy,

Since last year, cell phones and other electronic devices are now permitted in New York City Public Schools. In collaboration with the School Leadership Team, the following guidelines will be put into effect for the possession of all cell phones and electronic devices at the 51st Avenue Academy:

  • Cell phones and other electronic devices may not be turned on or used while on school property or while on school trips.
  • The school will not be responsible for any damaged, lost, or stolen cell phones or electronic devices.
  • If a cell phone or an electronic device is confiscated, a parent or a legal guardian will be required to come to the school to pick up the device at the end of the school day.
  • If a cell phone or an electronic device is confiscated for a second time, a parent or a legal guardian will be required to come to the school to pick up the device two weeks from the day it was confiscated.
  • If a cell phone or an electronic device is confiscated for a third time, a parent or a legal guardian will be required to come to the school to pick up the device four weeks from the day it was confiscated.
  • If a cell phone or an electronic device is used in a manner to record or take a picture of a staff member or another student, the device will be confiscated and the student may be subject to disciplinary action as per the Chancellor’s Discipline Code. A copy of the discipline code can be found:

We understand the importance of technology and communication in today’s world but we also want to ensure the safety of our students, as well as their property. Please feel free to contact our parent coordinator, Tanya Melito or myself if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Jason Chin, Principal
