Dear 51st Avenue Academy Families,

Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year!!!!  I am looking forward to another exciting and productive year as we welcome our incoming fourth graders to the Academy and celebrate and prepare our returning fifth grade students for middle school and beyond.

This year, the 51st Avenue Academy will continue to implement Columbia University’s Teachers College Reading and Writing Curriculum.  My administrative team, coaches, and teachers will continue to build upon our work the last several years and seek out the most innovative teaching practices available.  We have intensely planned this upcoming school year with the revised and new reading curriculum and continue to tweak the new units of study to meet the needs of ALL our students.  We feel that our curriculum is rigorous, challenging, and is best aligned with the Common Core State Standards.

We will continue to implement the Common Core aligned Go Math program within all of our classrooms.  Our teachers will communicate the “real world” importance of all the mathematical skills that are being taught to our Academy students and demonstrate how to apply these skills beyond the classrooms.  We will continue to push our students to communicate and articulate their thinking and reasoning so that we can assess their strengths and address areas of concern.

One of our goals at the 51st Avenue Academy is to develop the “whole” child by exposing them to as many experiences as possible through our arts, music, science, dance, and physical education programs.  To improve and build upon our existing programs, this year we will continue to implement Academy Clubs to our students.  Students will be able to participate in over 25 clubs that will be facilitated by our staff once a week.  I am excited about our continued initiative and we know that this will provide an additional experience for all of our students along with our other programs.

Pease visit our school website at www.51aveacademy.org for school updates, calendars, and events at the 51st Avenue Academy.  Our school website will be our primary source of communication to families so please visit frequently to be kept up to date.

Again, I am excited about this upcoming school year and I can’t wait to work with you and your child!  As always, thanks for your continued support and commitment to the 51st Avenue Academy!

Sincerely,

Jason Chin
